Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is an alternative therapy that primarily addresses conditions of the Central Nervous System (the brain and spinal cord), and those parts of the body which form its protective environment (cranium, spine, sacrum and other tissues).

History

This work originated in the middle part of the 20th Century when an Osteopath named William G. Sutherland applied the principles and touch-oriented therapeutic skills of Osteopathy to the bones and joints of the cranium. He discovered that gentle work on the head had profound results on the whole body. Over time Sutherland’s original work has evolved both within and outside of the Osteopathic community. Fundamental to Sutherland’s experience of healing are the energetic underpinnings of health and human function. The Biodynamic model, which is based on this energetic orientation, is the leading-edge expression of Craniosacral Therapy.

Theory

All healthy, living tissues of the body breathe with the motion of life, exhibiting subtle rhythmic impulses that can be palpated by sensitive hands. These motions initially arise at the core of the body and involve the central nervous system, the cerebrospinal fluid and the surrounding tissues and bones, including the bones of the skull and pelvis.

These motions have important physiological functions for the maintenance of health, for if they become congested or restricted, then the basic ordering principle of the body becomes impeded and health is compromised. Some common causes of restriction or resistance to these subtle motions of the body are physical injuries, emotional and psychological factors, birth trauma and toxicity.

Application

As a practitioner my work unfolds along a simple path, which is the same within an individual session and in a series of sessions. I begin by establishing a gentle hands-on relationship with your body, listening deeply to the expressions of motion that are present, and noting the places where your body is healthy. Working from health is my fundamental orientation, the health already present within you is the reference point for further healing.

I may then utilize processes that augment the general vitality and constitutional strength of your body. It is important to have the resources present that provide the power for healing to take place. This often initiates a cascade of self-correcting actions within your body- softening of tissues, releases of pent-up energy or emotion that has been keeping you fixated and unhealthy.

I will look for any patterns of congestion or restriction, and I will actively encourage your inherent health to be expressed once again within these patterns. My objective is not to fix anything, but to facilitate new levels of order and balance in mind and body.

The last phase of the work is integration, bridging what was always healthy with positive changes so that you will live in a new and healthier way.

All the principles of heaven and Earth are living inside you. Life itself is truth, and this will never change. Everything in heaven and earth breathes. Breath is the thread that ties creation together.
